Katie Holmes, nicknamed Kate, was a student at the all-girls Catholic school Notre Dame Academy in Toledo, Ohio, from which she graduated in 1997. She began to model and signed up with Margaret O'Brien's Modeling School in Toledo. At age 16, she competed at the International Modeling and Talent Association and took home many awards. Despite her promising modeling career, Katie opted for acting as her full time job. She felt modeling was not enough of a challenge.

Although her big-screen debut was in Ang Lee's The Ice Storm, Katie Holmes first gained national notoriety on the televised teen drama Dawson's Creek. Before the show went off the air in 2003, she'd had roles in films like Go and Michael Douglas' Wonder Boys. After Creek's end, Holmes dedicated herself to film work, gaining critical acclaim for the gritty comedy Pieces of April. In 2005, she gained worldwide attention less for her role in Batman Begins than for her quick-moving relationship with Tom Cruise. The two actors were engaged after two months of dating, amid much tabloid speculation over their motives. Though not part of the Bat-sequel The Dark Knight, she returns to the screen after playing mom to baby Suri opposite Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah in Mad Money.

She later sent in a tape of herself performing to Kevin Williamson, for the “Dawsons Creek” audition. When the audition time conflicted with her school musical, Katie opted to perform in the musical, and Williamson opted to wait for the star who was to become Joey Potter. She has recently been in the news for her marriage to star Tom Cruise. They have a baby daughter, Suri.
