Katie Couric is the anchor of The CBS Evening News. She previously was the host of the NBC morning program The Today Show from 1991 through 2006. Couric worked for CNN and ABC early in her career... reporting in Miami and Washington, D.C. She joined NBC News in 1989 and the Today show in 1990, becoming permanent co-anchor in 1991. With her perky attitude and no-holds-barred interviewing style, Couric boosted the show's sagging ratings and became one of morning TV's most popular personalities. Her husband, Jay Monahan, died in 1998 of colon cancer, and in 1999 Couric co-founded a non-profit organization for cancer research and education. In 2001 Couric signed a new contract (worth a reported $65 million) to remain with The Today Show through 2006.

The newscaster with the thousand-watt smile, Katie Couric became a vital companion to millions of Americans getting ready for work when she assumed hosting duties of the Today show in 1991. Effervescent, intelligent, and always energetic, Couric became a cultural icon during her 15-year run on the program, sharing the sympathy of legions when her husband died in 1998 of colon cancer. In order to spread public awareness about the preventative nature of colon cancer, Couric surprised viewers in 2000 by broadcasting her own colonoscopy on national television. Always a risk taker, Couric announced in 2006 that she'd be leaving the program to become the first solo female anchor of a nightly national news program at CBS. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide

A day after Katie Couric announced she was leaving for CBS, NBC has chosen Meredith Vieira as Katie's replacement on the "Today" show. Meredith Vieira is currently moderator of The View. She joined ABC news in 1993. It will be interesting to see how the chemistry is between Merideth and Matt Lauer. Katie will be missed for sure.

In the April 12 edition of her "Notebook" video blog, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric asked, "Is America ready to elect a president who grew up praying in a mosque?" and proceeded to repeat debunked rumors surrounding Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) childhood years in Indonesia.

Couric has NOT always hosted the Olympic Opening Cermonies since 1992 alongside Bob Costas. For instance, Dick Enberg hosted with Bob Costas from Atlanta in 1996 as evidenced in this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ah5DF2dmhtQ
