Kathleen Turner Kathleen Turner is an Academy Award nominated American actress. In 1978, she made her acting debut in the NBC daytime soap opera "The Doctors." Turner soon launched a successful film career, making her debut in "Body Heat" (1981). Turner ... starred in "Romancing the Stone," for which she won a Golden Globe. Turner?s movies include "The Jewel of the Nile," "Prizzi's Honor," for which she won a second Golden Globe, and "Peggy Sue Got Married," for which Turner received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. In the 1990s, Turner took smaller roles, including a role in Sofia Coppola's acclaimed debut, "The Virgin Suicides."

Kathleen Turner was the third of four children born to a US Foreign Service couple. Her formative years were nomadic, as the family moved from Canada to Cuba to Venezuela to England. While attending high school in London, Kathleen became captivated by theatre. She did not see herself as the film star she would later become, but saw herself on the stage. It was while in England that she developed the sexy voice that would be her trademark.

The famously husky-voiced actress Kathleen Turner was born on this day in 1954 in Springfield, Missouri. The daughter of career diplomats, Turner lived in four foreign countries while growing up (Canada, Cuba, Venezuela and the U.K.). As a young woman she was known for her stunning looks and deep, sexy voice and was often compared to 1940s Hollywood sex symbol Lauren Bacall. Throughout her career, Turner has received numerous award nominations, including five Golden Globes nominations plus an Oscar nod for 1986’s Peggy Sue Got Married. Turner received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Savannah College of Art and Design at the Savannah Film Festival in October 2004 and was ... a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004.
