In her decades-long love affair with Tracy -- they never married because Tracy, a Catholic, would not get a divorce -- she was happy to cede to him the dominant role. Friends noted that, when Tracy was around, Hepburn smiled and said little, looked at him adoringly and laughed at his jokes.

The two of them were back on form in Frank Capra's State of the Union (1948), which presented Tracy as a candidate for the presidency, and Hepburn as the estranged wife who returns to his side. The delightful Adam's Rib (1949), by the same director, showed them as lawyers on opposite sides in an attempted murder case.
