built 657 days ago
According to A Scott Berg's biography of Hepburn, she was offered the role of Aunt March in the 3rd film version (Hepburn had played Jo in the first one). She declined, saying she could not be better than Edna Mae Oliver in the '33 version.

Hepburn cut her acting teeth in plays at Bryn Mawr and later in revues staged by stock companies. During her last years at Bryn Mawr, Hepburn met a young producer with a stock company in Baltimore, Maryland, who cast her in several small roles, including a production of The Czarina and The Cradle Snatchers.

The financial cushion her family provided was essential in Hepburn's early career, and she herself speculated at times how she ever would have managed had she had to wait tables as a young actress. She got the acting bug at Bryn Mawr, her mother's alma mater, and acted in student productions. Upon graduation, she had an easy time getting roles in professional productions but a hard time holding on to them. Though she has gone into legend as the soul of unflappability, the young Hepburn suffered from paralyzing bouts of stage fright.
