Long before the end of her rich and irrepressible life, Katharine Hepburn, who has died aged 96, had gone beyond the level of mere movie star, and won a public affection granted to few people. She would sometimes marvel at the warmth with which strangers wrote to her, and she could discuss the phenomenon of herself in ways that left no doubt about her steely, serene ego, but which never jeopardised her charm. Though "charm" is not quite the word. She had an authority, a natural eccentricity and the spunky good sense of a magnificent aunt. So many who never met her must feel her loss in those terms.

Hepburn's professional legacy is today carried on within her family. Hepburn's niece is actress Katharine Houghton, who appeared as her daughter in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Hepburn's grandniece is actress Schuyler Grant; the two appeared together in the 1988 television movie Laura Lansing Slept Here.
From 1935 to 1938, Hepburn made eight films, but only two hits: STAGE DOOR (1937) and ALICE ADAMS (1935). She teamed with Cary Grant in a series of delightful screwball comedies, the best of which, BRINGING UP BABY (1938), was a flop at the time but is now considered a classic.
