Kate Mulgrew occupies a rare spot in the entertainment world, the captain's seat on the Federation starship Voyager. From 1995–2001, Mulgrew played the role of Captain Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager—the first woman to play the lead in any of Trek's incarnations. Mulgrew first became known to television audiences as Mary Ryan on the daytime soap opera Ryan's Hope (1975–77, 1983, 1989). She has played a range of characters in television series, miniseries, and movies, most notably Kate Loves a Mystery (... known as Mrs. Columbo, 1979). Although her feature film career has been unremarkable, Mulgrew has an impressive stage resume, having appeared at the American Shakespeare Festival, the O'Neill Festival, and at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. She toured for several years in Tea at Five, a one-woman show in which she portrays Katharine Hepburn.
