Kate married Robert H. Egan in 1982 and the couple had two children, Ian Thomas and Alexander James. They separated in 1993 and divorced in 1995. Shortly after the divorce she was called to fill the role of Nicole Janeway when the original actress, Genevieve Bujold, abandoned the role. On her request, the character's name was changed to Kathryn. She remarried on April 19, 1999 to politician Tim Hagan who proposed to her on the set of Voyager.
