Kate Mulgrew: Katharine Hepburn
built 214 days ago
As a teenager, plucky Kate Mulgrew packed up her diploma from Dubuque's Wahlert High School and moved to New York City to become an actress. These days, Mulgrew is reaping accolades for her one-woman play "Tea at Five," in which she re-creates legendary actress Katharine Hepburn at two points in her life: at ages 31 and 76. The play was written by Matthew Lombardo especially for Mulgrew, who says she has often been likened to Hepburn, perhaps because of her high cheekbones and husky voice. "Tea at Five" made its off-Broadway debut in March 2003. Katherine Kiernan Mulgrew was born in Dubuque on April 29, 1955, the second-oldest of eight children - and the oldest daughter - of Thomas "Ace" Mulgrew, who ran an asphalt business, and Joan Mulgrew, a painter. The Irish Catholic family lived on a 50-acre estate called Darby Grange.

The second act centers around two long stories, starting with the suicide death of her 15-year-old brother when Kate was a child. She discovered the body of her brother hanging from a beam in the ceiling of his bedroom. This becomes overly dramatic as she seems to be an actress trying to imitate Ms. Hepburn. The second story is about her complex relationship with Spencer Tracy, and she fares much better in telling some wonderful anecdotes on the great actor. She ... tells an amusing story about Stephen Sondheim when he was writing Company and living next door to Hepburn in New York. During the second act, she is interrupted by phone calls from Warren Beatty, who wants her to appear in the film Love Affair, which she made in 1994.
