In the second episode of Cheers' three-part season four finale, Diane (Shelley Long) is convinced that councilwoman Janet Eldridge (Kate Mulgrew) will dump Sam (Ted Danson) once Janet has lost the election. But not only does Janet remain attached to Sam, but she insists that he fire Diane. Convinced that he's doing Diane a favor, Sam prepares to let her go -- but Diane beats him to the punch. Meanwhile, Norm (George Wendt) braces for a visit from his rapacious sister-in-law. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

During her time on the soap, Mulgrew became pregnant. As an unmarried woman, she placed her child for adoption. Her pregnancy was written into the story line, and Mulgrew gave birth in 1977 and left the show Ryan’s Hope soon after, returning several different times between 1983 and 1989.
Says Kate Mulgrew: "My guess is that if there is a market for it, they will find a way of combining the Next Generation with Voyager in some dangerous way in which Janeway will triumph over Picard. In the last scene he is on his knees, weeping, and cries to me, "You are my Queen!"

The balance of character story and science makes Mulgrew very happy. "Brannon knows that great writing is both things, the inside and the outside. What motivates the character and then what in fact the character does. That's good storytelling - he has that hook." The actress describes the dialogue as "dry and quick - the unexpected and therefore delightful, especially in long briefing room scenes."
