The autopsy was performed by Los Angeles County autopsy surgeon, Dr. Harold Kade, who concluded that Karyn Kupcinet had been dead about three days. Due to a broken hyoid bone in her throat, Dr. Kade concluded that the actress had been strangled. He did not tell law enforcement about any other signs of strangulation that he had found, such as damage to her tongue, and they remained secret until documents about her autopsy were unearthed more than four decades later. The decomposition of her body during the two to three days before its discovery made it impossible for Dr. Kade to determine if she had been raped. The findings he reported prompted the Homicide Squad of the sheriffs' office to begin an investigation.
