On the last day of her life, Kupcinet had dinner with Lost In Space cast member Mark Goddard, and his wife, Marcia Rogers Goddard, at their house on Coldwater Canyon Drive in Beverly Hills (near Mulholland Drive). She was due there at 6:30 pm, but arrived an hour late by taxicab. The couple said Kupcinet only toyed with her food during their meal. Marcia told two sergeants from the L.A. County Sheriff's Office that during dinner with Kupcinet "... her lips seemed numb.

Prine told authorities he last saw Karyn in person on November 24, after their return from Palm Springs. When she phoned him on Wednesday around 6:30 p.m., a "misunderstanding" led to the couple agreeing not to see one another as often. He said he then took an actress named Anna Capri on a date to see A Streetcar Named Desire at what was then the New Yorker Theatre located on Beverly Boulevard. The Los Angeles Times confirmed what Prine and Capri told authorities about the location of the cinema and which movie they saw. (At that time and for decades thereafter, this cinema, known in 2007 as the New Beverly Cinema, consisted of just one screen.) After the movie ended, Prine and Capri had a drink at a Sunset Boulevard restaurant. Prine then took Capri home and returned to his Laurel Canyon home alone.

Crime writer James Ellroy visited the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office in the 1990s to research Kupcinet's death. He theorized in Glamour Jungle that she could have sustained a fatal injury while taking a shower, dancing in the nude or otherwise moving her body awkwardly under the influence of a stimulant.[5] According to Ellroy, a book that recommended naked dancing was found among Kupcinet's possessions. Ellroy has theorized that the actress followed the advice in the book and started dancing, fell and clipped her hyoid bone on a chair.[5]
