Writer James Ellroy believes Karyn could have sustained an injury while taking a shower, dancing in the nude or otherwise moving her body awkwardly under the influence of a stimulant. According to Ellroy, a book that recommended naked dancing was found among the actress' possessions. Authorities discovered it after it had been removed from a shelf and left out in the open turned to a page that sang the praises of naked dancing. [4] James Ellroy discovered in 1998, after studying sheriffs' documents and interviewing surviving officers, that even in the 1960s some of them thought a household accident was plausible. Medical experts consulted by Ellroy said that if an methamphetamine-fueled Karyn had broken her neck in the shower or while dancing, she could have crawled to the couch and lain face down while she was dying, which would explain why Mark and Marcia Goddard and sheriffs saw her like that.

In the 1970 edition of his book Hollywood's Unsolved Mysteries, author John Austin devoted an entire chapter to the death of Karyn Kupcinet. In 1990 he published another edition of the book, and the Kupcinet murder received only a short paragraph.(19)
