Karnov is a two-dimensional, platform style game. You control Karnov through nine scenes. Each of these scenes gives you piece of a map (except the first scene). Get all the pieces of the map and you get to the treasure. Your journey won't be easy though. You will be going through some rough environment such as towns, forests, oceans, and caves.

Karnov is a video game by Data East from 1987. It was originally released as an arcade game; an NES version followed, along with various other versions. The game puts the bulging muscled, fire-breathing, ex-circus strongman east-Russian (Asian) hero on a quest to search for treasures. However, between him and the treasures were several horrendous monsters, including sword wielding monks, jinns, foot hopping giant fishes and ostrich-riding skeleton warriors.

Karnov must travel through 9 different levels. He must walk, jump and shoot his way through these levels and find special items that will help him on his way. He can collect red orbs in which he can upgrade up to 3 fireballs at a time. Each level contains a variety of strange enemies, such as gargoyles, rock creatures, and strong men, which Karnov must destroy or avoid. When he reaches the end of a level he usually has to face one or more powerful enemies which he must defeat to beat the level and receive a new piece of a treasure map. At the end of the game he must face a powerful boss often called "The Wizard" and collect the treasure.
The treasure was actually kept in Karnov's home village of Creamina and it is there where Karnov starts his quest. Various monsters small and large stand in your way but the powerups that you can pick up will double or triple your firepower by letting you shoot two or three fireballs at once. Some powerups are needed for the larger enemies like a shield but others like the ladder are need to get into places. The problem with some of these is that it isn't always clear which items you can or cannot jump onto as they all look exactly the same. After you finish a stage you will get a piece of the map leading to the treasure and a hint about what to do in the next stage. Can you defeat Ryu, the dragon, and get back the treasure?
Karnov was released for the Famicom on December 18, 1987 in Japan, and a year later on its North American equivalent, the NES, in 1988. Although it plays very similarly to the original arcade game there are some noticeable differences:
Visually, Karnov is pedestrian. Compared with other games that hit Arcades in 1987, Karnov is slightly below average. None of the characters are terribly detailed and the background scenery is drab. Karnov is not exactly a feast for the eyes.
