Noch im selben Jahr setzte er die Umgründung zum Bund der Kommunisten durch und erhielt den Auftrag, dessen Manifest zu verfassen. Es wurde im Revolutionsjahr 1848 veröffentlicht und ging als Kommunistisches Manifest (eigentlich: Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei) in die Geschichte ein. Im September 1850 wurden Marx und Engels aus dem Bund ausgeschlossen, weil sie mit der Gründung einer eigenen Zentralbehörde in Köln gegen die Statuten verstoßen hatten und die übrigen Mitglieder ihnen „halbgelehrte politische Träumereien“ vorwarfen.
