Karl Marx: Fathers
built 642 days ago
At this stage, Marx's views were developing. Some mysterious things appear in his correspondence with his father. For instance, the son writes: "The cover has fallen, my Holy of Holies was emptied and there was a need to put new gods there." This was written on November 10, 1837 by the young fellow who previously professed to be a Christian. He used to profess that Christ inhabited in his heart. Suddenly this turned upside-down. What new gods replaced Christ's place?

Marx was born into a progressive Jewish family in Trier, Prussia (now a part of Germany). His father Herschel was a lawyer. As advancement opportunities for Jews were rather limited in early 19th century Prussia and they were not extremely religious, Herschel decided to change his name to Heinrich and convert the family to the Prussian state religion of Lutheranism, after which his legal career prospered. The Marx family was very liberal and the Marx household hosted many visiting intellectuals and artists through Karl's early life.

While in Paris, Marx befriended Friedrich Engels... a German. Engels' father owned a share in several textile mills in Manchester, England. Although Engels worked in the family business, he soon began to publish works critical of capitalists.
