Czech singer and painter Karel Gott was born on July 14, 1939, in Pilson, Czechoslovakia, but has made his home in Prague since he was six years old. Fascinated by jazz, he first began singing in public in 1958, and in 1960 began studying opera and voice at Prague Conservatory. He released his first single, a duet with Vlasta Pruchova, on Supraphon Records in 1962. A year later his first solo single appeared, a Czech version of Henry Mancini's "Moon River," and Gott subsequently ended his official studies at the conservatory, quickly building an impressive career as a singer and composer. In 1967 he signed with Polydor/Deutsche Grammophon and has remained with the label ever since, releasing an astounding 125 albums and some 72 singles for the imprint between 1967 and 2000 alone. In the 1990s Gott began turning his attention to painting, mounting his first exhibition in 1992.
Karel Gott has been an important personality on the Czech music scene since 1963. The beginnings of his performance date back to 1958 - 1960, when he participated in amateur contests. However, in an era of baritones, the brilliant young tenor had little chance of success. Lack of interest from the panels of judges was compensated by the interest of the public, which subsequently convinced artistic colleagues to begin co-operation. In 1958 Karel Gott obtained his first engagement at the Vltava cafe.

Karel Gott had a much more successful transition to capitalism in the 90s. Though he announced his retirement early in the decade, he quickly renounced it when he saw how much popularity he still had. Since then, he has appeared in movies and television commercials, and continues to spread his brand all over the world. He remains one of the most popular vocal artists in the country. According to the Czech record label Suraphon, he has sold more than 15 million records in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. There are no official numbers regarding the amount of records he has sold around the world, but estimates range from 30 million up to 100 million.
