Historically, Kano has been a centre of trade especially towards the North across the Sahara and South to Zaria. It is currently the largest city in the North and the capital of Kano State. A marked distinction could ... be noticed between the old Hausa City and the modern industrial one served by an international airport, rail lines and major roads.

British forces captured Kano in 1903 and made it the administrative centre of Northern Nigeria. It was replaced as the centre of government by Kaduna, and only regained administrative significance with the creation of Kano State following Nigerian independence.
