Kano is the administrative center of the Kano State and the third largest city in Nigeria, in terms of geographical size, after Ibadan and Lagos. In population, it is the second most populous city (with a population of 3,848,885) in the country after Lagos. The city's traditional ruler is the Emir of Kano, and the current Emir, Ado Bayero, has been on the throne since 1963.

Jan 04, 2008 -- Kano State government has established urology centre with the hope that the hospital if fully utilised will reduced the quest of going abroad in search for medical attention. This was disclosed by the state governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau while commissioning the hospital in Fagge local government area, named Dr.

[One] dream, an International Judo Federation, plans for which Kano revealed in 1933, came true in 1952. Today, more than six million persons practice Judo in over 30 countries around the world. In October of 1969 thousands of Judo fans watched the sixth World Judo Championships in Mexico City-vivid proof of Jigoro Kano's prophetic statement, "When I die, Kodokan Judo will not die with me because all things can be studied if these principles (best use of energy and mutual prosperity) are studied."

The city of Kano was founded around the year 1000 as an independent Hausa city-state. Kano remained a leading independent emirate or kingdom until the creation of the Nigerian nation state in 1903. Kano grew to be a prosperous centre for trans-Saharan trade in gold, leather, ivory, salt and slaves, perhaps reaching the height of its wealth and power in the 14th century, when Islam gained a growing following. By the 15th century the first Central Mosque had been erected in the city.

When modern Kano State was created in 1967 and formally came in to being on April 1st 1968, it covered an area of about 16,630 square miles and had four separate emirates Kano, Ha]ejia, Gumel & Kazaure. Today, because of Jigawa State being carved out of Kano State, the population is 5.6 Million (1991 Census), cover an area of 20,760 Sq. Km and has one emirate Kano.
