Kanji
built 640 days ago
Kanji is a form of written characters for the Japanese. So each Japanese kanji tattoo design carries with it ideas and meaning behind the character. Even though a specific design of the kanji tattoos appeals to you, you don't want to end up a laughing stock being "p**s" rather than "peace". Asking the tattoo artists, unfortunately, is no guarantee of finding out the true meaning of a kanji. After all, they are tattoo artists, not linguists of the Japanese language.

Sometimes, especially in 漫画 (まんが, manga = comics), the Kanji will have the kana equivalent written next to it so that it is easier to read. These are called 振り仮名 (ふりがな, Furigana), or sometimes 読み仮名 (よみがな, Yomigana). When used like this, the kana used is almost always hiragana.

Kanji originated from Chinese characters. Many [K]anji are exactly the same as the Chinese character; ... characters have changed or been simplified over time in both China and Japan, resulting in several differences between kanji and Chinese characters. In both writing systems, kanji are made up of basic characters or characters composed of radicals. Radicals are the components of a character. Sometimes the radicals look exactly like the basic character they represent (except smaller because all characters, be they composed of one or fifteen parts, occupy the same amount of space). However, radicals are often altered so that they better fit into a tighter space.

The characters for Kanji, lit. "Han characters".Man'yōgana written in cursive style became hiragana, a writing system that was accessible to women (who were denied higher education). Major works of Heian era literature by women were written in hiragana. Katakana emerged via a parallel path: monastery students simplified man'yōgana to a single constituent element. Thus the two other writing systems, hiragana and katakana, referred to collectively as kana, are actually descended from kanji.
