Kaliningrad: Kaliningrad City
built 623 days ago
Kaliningrad is the new name of the old city Kenigsberg, founded in 1255 by the knights of the Teutonic order. The unique city, part of which is occupied by parks and public gardens, was renamed Kaliningrad in 1946. Here the architecture typical for old European capitals is harmonically combined with modern buildings. Kaliningrad is an economical and cultural center of the region. The tourists' interest to the city has been constantly growing. Kaliningrad is located near the Baltic Sea and known as the city of amber.

Although the Kaliningrad oblast is a small piece of Europe, it has a lot going on! After exploring the city of Kaliningrad, your private driver and English speaking guide will take you to Svetlogorsk, the Kaliningrad riviera town. Here you can relax in a small comfortable hotel and wander the pine tree parks, bathe in the Baltic sea or hunt for amber on the sandy beaches. It is a vibrant summer town with many festivals and concerts. You will be holidaying with the Russians, this trip is very rewarding with a little effort and a Russian dictionary!

The best Kaliningrad has on offer is a railway trip for less than 80RR to the city of Svetlogorsk. To see: nice old German Houses surrounded by green and a nice location next to the beach side. Walk straight on through the main street, where shasliks and dorum is for sale together with stalls that provide you with fresh fruit and vegatables, beers ice creams or souvenirs. In the end turn left and walk down the huge stairs to the promenade / boulevard where you will find on sunny days happy Russians getting a tan, taking a refreshing dive in the calm sea or playing beach volleyball. Water bikes can be rented and many beach bars have their wooden picknique tables out side with parasols. For a night in the 5 star hotel Grand Place one pays between 100.00 and 400.00 Euros.

In Kaliningrad you will find the world's richest amber deposits, beautiful sandy beaches along the Curonian Spit, skirted with pine forests and summer houses. An island of Russia, surrounded by new EU states, Kaliningrad offers the independent traveller an opportunity to explore Russia on the cheap, with costs a fraction of those in St Petersburg or Moscow. Full of contrasts of the romantic Russian soul, the money of 'New Russians', and aspects of the Russia we associate with cold war spy novels, mystery and secrecy behind the Iron Curtain (visit a closed military city, or crawl through an old Soviet submarine!). Discover this quirky corner of Europe with a Kaliningrad city break.

Luckily for the city, Kaliningrad has recently become the linchpin of the new ambitions to deepen EU-Russian cooperation, which offers some hope of improving the situation. Discussions on Kaliningrad’s future have already taken place in various multilateral settings and arenas, including the high-level EU-Russia summit held in Moscow in May 2001. The document "The European Commission’s Communication to the [European] Council—the EU and Kaliningrad," issued in Brussels in early 2001, outlines some of the most urgent issues as well as the corresponding proposals (see http://europa.eu.int/search/s97.vts). In addition, the agreements with Poland and Lithuania have taken up these issues, which were ... partly addressed by the EU’s new Northern Dimension Action Plan. The following suggestions were put on the table:
