Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari Desert is in Southern Africa. 900,000 km from the Kalahari Desert is covering much of Botswana , and parts of Namibia and South Africa. The only permanent river, the Okavango, flows into a delta in the Northwest. The surface is mostly covered with red soil, except in the East where large patches of sand are found. When a heavy rain occures, pans of water form in the extensive mud flats. But the Kalahari is not a true Desert.
Kalahari Game Lodge The Kalahari Desert is part of the huge sand basin, reaching from the Orange River up to Angola, over the east of Namibia, into Botswana and South Africa. The erosion of soft stone formations created the sand masses. The red parallel dunes with wind-shaped sand ridges were stabilised through vegetation and are so typical of the landscape in the Kalahari. Unlike the dunes of the Namib Desert, those of the Kalahari are stable and not wandering. Dominant vegetation: grasses, thorny shrubs and Acacia trees.
The Kalahari Desert stretches across seven countries and covers the entire central and south western regions of Botswana. However, its name is misleading because the average rainfall exceeds that of a true desert. Instead it is a vast, arid, predominantly featureless area of sandy sediments. Its plains are covered by scrub, grasses and patches of woodland. There is no surface water in the Kalahari and only occasional rivers. It incorporates the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, where a surprisingly large number of animals thrive.
Kalahari Desert trips cover a large portion of southern Africa. Well over half of Botswana is covered by the Kalahari Desert, as are portions of Zimbabwe, Namibia, and South Africa. The region, while extremely arid in places, is not a true desert. Due to the amount of rainfall in certain spots, it is classified as a fossil desert. This rainfall allows a variety of wildlife to survive in the area.
The sand of the Kalahari Desert was created by the erosion of soft stone formations and then the wind shaped the sand. Later on, the dunes stabilised through vegetation and the area became a dry savannah. Today, the desert covers an area of 225,000 miles, making it the second largest desert in Africa behind Sahara. Because the desert receives more than 10 inches of rain a year it features vegetation including grasses, thorny shrubs and Acacia trees. It is ... home to weaver birds, hyenas, lions, meerkats, antelopes and reptiles, of which you can see on your South Africa holiday in Namibia.
The Kalahari Desert is a large arid to semi-arid sandy area in southern Kgalagadi Africa extending 900,000 km². The Kalahari supports some animals and plants because most of it is not real desert. There are small amounts of rainfall and the summer temperature is very high. The riverbeds are mostly grazing spots, though leopard or cheetah can still be found.
