Kalahari Desert: South Africa
built 641 days ago
Into the parched Kalahari Desert a great African river comes to a remarkable end, far from the sea. This extraordinary meeting of water and sand gives birth to a pristine wilderness, the Okavango River Delta. When monumental fires break out in the Delta, an elemental battle erupts between fire and water; and many of the creatures of the Kalahari face their greatest challenge yet.
kalahari, kalahari map, kalahari region The Kalahari is not a true desert but rather an arid savanna and is quite densely covered with grasses, shrubs and trees. It is regarded as one of Africa’s last wilderness areas and is probably one of the largest relatively undisturbed arid savannas in Africa. Inaccessibility, the lack of prominent landmarks and the lack of surface water for most of the year, have contributed to minimal human impact and the preservation of the area.
The Kalahari Desert is made up of a huge sand basin that stretches from the Orange River in South Africa up to Angola, through Namibia and a large part of Botswana. You can drive into this large semi desert area in southern Kgalagadi Africa from South Africa, Botswana or Namibia depending on where you decide to take a drive safari holiday.
The Kalahari desert is twice as big As Italy and speeded between Namibia and Botswana in the austral hemisphere on the south of Africa. This desert is the home of the Bushmen's who are the only population able to survive in one of the driest region of the earth. Thanks to a very short rain season, which makes it a bush desert populated by numerous animals: from the venomous insects, deadly snakes, gazelles, ostrich, lions and hyenas. Every encounter is possible and may become dangerous.
A lion on the prowl The Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa is a world of extremes, its apparent emptiness punctuated by explosions of life. Relentless cycles of dry and wet, scarcity and plenty, dictate which creatures can live here, and which will die.
