The Kalahari Desert is an arid and semi-arid area, over four times the size of Great Britain, stretching over most of Botswana, and parts of Namibia and South Africa. Temperatures vary drastically in the Kalahari, going below zero on winter nights and reaching as high as 40 degrees Celsius during summer days. Long periods of drought intersect with rare but violent thunderstorms. The Kalahari's endemic species, or the species that can only be found in the Kalahari, have developed unique ways to feed themselves, go long periods without water and to survive extreme temperatures.

The Kalahari Desert is a large, arid to semi-arid sandy area in southern Africa that covers about 500,000 km2. It covers 70% of Botswana, and parts of Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa. Some sources would extended the area of the Kalahari to over 2.5m km2 and include Gabon, Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, and Zambia.

The Kalahari Desert covers the entire western and central regions of Botswana and stretches into Namibia and South Africa. With an average annual rainfall of 250mm, it is not a true desert but rather a "thirst-land" with grasses and scrub vegetation prevailing. Despite the lack of surface water, the area supports a great variety of plants, animals and birds and many of these species have developed fascinating adaptations to their harsh environment. Because of its remote and arid nature, the Kalahari is difficult to access and human interference continues to be minimal, the area is therefore extremely important for conservation.

Africa's "other" great desert, the giant Kalahari, should not be written off just because it is the next-door neighbor of the Sahara. A grand and elevated (always more than 3,000 feet above sea level) interior plain that covers most of Botswana, huge swaths of Namibia, and a part of northern South Africa, the Kalahari extends for more than 360,000 square miles. The mostly featureless, gently rolling surface is blanketed by red (iron oxidized) sand that can reach depths of over 200 feet! The Kalahari was once much wetter than it is today. Pans, or "dry lakes," are evidence of this. Water once flowed into landlocked depressions where evaporation has left only the mineral and salt-rich silt.

The Kalahari Desert covers most of Botswana and portions of northern South Africa and eastern Namibia. The desert is part of a much larger semidesert sand basin that stretches into Angola, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The desert's name is derived from the Tswana word Kgalagadi, meaning "the great thirst."
