Like other musical performers in New York, the 5'1" Allyson found work in movie short subjects that were filmed there. Her first opportunity came from Educational Pictures at its Astoria, Long Island studio. Educational cast her as an ingenue opposite singer Lee Sullivan, comic dancers Herman Timberg, Jr. and Pat Rooney, Jr., and future comedy star Danny Kaye. When Educational ceased operations, Allyson moved over to Vitaphone in Brooklyn, and starred or co-starred (with dancer Hal LeRoy) in musical shorts until that studio discontinued New York production in 1940.

In 1984, Allyson signed on as spokesperson for Depend products. According to her Web site, she at first had reservations because she didn't suffer from incontinence "and thought it wouldn't be right to advertise for something she didn't need. It was her mother, suffering from incontinence, who convinced her it was a good cause and she would help a lot of people."

Getting a foothold in Hollywood was not easy for Allyson, whom MGM movie chief Louis B. Mayer and others considered not conventionally beautiful. And although she got into films as a Broadway singer and dancer, Allyson was the first to say she was not particularly good at either.
