When June Allyson was 8 years old, a tree branch fell on her and she was seriously injured. Everybody thought she would never walk again, even her. While she was recovering she saw a movie with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing. She watched it eighteen times. She taught herself to dance by practicing their steps.

Eventually, Allyson could go without a cast and a brace. She wanted desperately to learn to dance and, unable to afford dance lessons, she picked it up by going to see Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies.

After a childhood accident which nearly left her crippled, Allyson took up dancing and swimming for therapy. She enjoyed the dancing and became an avid fan of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. She viewed one of their musicals 18 times and taught herself how to dance, and practiced interminably. This intensive exercise not only allowed her to recover completely from her accident but ... made her an accomplished dancer.
