`Jumanji" is being promoted as a jolly holiday season entertainment, with ads that show Robin Williams with a twinkle in his eye. The movie itself is likely to send younger children fleeing from the theater, or hiding in their parents' arms. Those who do sit all the way through it are likely to toss and turn with nightmares inspired by its frightening images.
Despite its technical flaws, “Jumanji” ... has a lot to offer. The story is well thought up and every time the dice are rolled you start to wonder, what surprise may be next. This element of unpredictability drives the entire movie forward. At the same time the film contains quite a bit of humor. This light-heartedness, combined with the lurking threat that comes from the game, create a furiously entertaining spectacle that makes for great family entertainment.

Jumanji's interactive menu options are rather limited, allowing for chapter, spoken language and subtitle selection only. There are no other special features like a trailer or cast notes. In the "chapter selection" section, all 59 chapters are featured and are spread out of 12 "pages". The chapter listings are presented as descriptions only (no corresponding image), on a background featuring Jumanji's cover artwork. Although perfectly functional, Columbia TriStar's overall menu design is extremely bland when compared to the snazzy "designer" interactive menus that show up on all of the other studios' discs.

Though it doesn't quite reach the level of chaotic fun or develop more than a perfunctory story, "Jumanji" is blessed with a winning cast. In addition to Williams' heartfelt, vulnerable performance, Hunt elicits humor and pathos as a wounded soul. Dunst and Pierce are an engaging pair who sidestep the saccharine abyss young performers are too often forced to inhabit.
