Julieta Venegas, born in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, on November 24, 1970, is a Mexican singer, instrumentalist, and songwriter who performs Spanish-language rock and pop music. Venegas, who grew up in Tijuana, began studying music at the age of eight and went on to join several bands, including Tijuana No!, before starting a career on her own. She fluently speaks both English and Spanish and has a twin sister, Yvonne, who is a photographer.
LOS ANGELES, CA - Julieta Venegas, who just last month won a Latin Grammy for Best Rock Album for her breakthrough album Si, was the big winner with 3 Awards at the MTV Awards Latino America last night. Molotov presented her the award for Mejor Solista O Interpretete, Lenny Kravitz presented her the award for Artista Del Año and she was presented with the Award for Best Artist from Mexico on the red carpet during the televised pre-show. Julieta gave an incredible performance of the Black Eyed Peas' "Hey Mamma", during the show opener, which ... included the hip-hop funksters from L.A., Diego Torres and La Ley. She also performed her hit track "Lento" with Monterey based hip-hop band Cartel de Santo. Julieta was dressed for the night by famed designer and good friend Luis Verdad.

Julieta Venegas, Tijuana's most vital singer-songwriter, had the Mercury Lounge in the palm of her hand on April 3 when she broke into fluent Spanglish. "¡Arriba Tijuana!" she said, acknowledging the shouts of her many roquero suitors. "Could I have some more vocal on the monitor?" A smattering of nervous laughter betrayed the crowd's self-recognition—finally, a Latin rock star as bilingual as Nueva York. Even though all of Venegas's lyrics are in Spanish, they tell personal stories familiar on both sides of the border, and even though she comes from a very Mexican folk tradition, her songs can cut like PJ Harvey, haunt like Tom Waits.
Over the course of four albums, from 1997 to 2006, Julieta Venegas evolved from a Latin alternative favorite to an international pop star, an evolution that Realmente Lo Mejor, a 12-track compilation of her singles to date, traces chronologically. Her four albums -- Aquí (1997), Bueninvento (1999), Sí (2003), Limón y Sal (2006) -- can be grouped together roughly. The first two, Aquí and Bueninvento, are abrasive alt-rock efforts, produced by Gustavo Santaolalla and backed by the rhythm section of Café Tacuba; though both albums were certified gold in Mexico, neither spawned a charting single (each did spawn a pair of singles... all four of which are compiled here). The latter two, Sí and Limón y Sal, are upbeat pop albums, produced and co-written by Coti Sorokin and Cachorro López; both albums were chart-toppers in Mexico, where each racked up four international hit singles, half of them number ones, and both albums were also Grammy recipients (Best Rock Solo Vocal Album for the former; Best Alternative Music Album and Best Latin Pop Album for the latter). Realmente Lo Mejor lines up the 12 singles from these four albums in the order that they were released, from the tense rock en español of "De Mis Pasos" to the lilting pop-rap of "Primer Día." The singles flow together smoothly, and by the end of the CD, the stylistic evolution of Venegas over the years sounds perfectly natural, an artistic progression rather than a calculated crossover bid.
Born a California girl on November 24, 1970, Julieta Venegas grew up in the tequila-laced border town of Tijuana. A multi-Latin Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, Julieta played with Mexico's biggest names before going solo and embarking on an explosive international career, even writing music for movies. Her music has been compared with that of Bjork and Fiona Apple in its aggressive bid to push creativity forward. Read More
