Though born to a very wealthy Michigan family, "Julie Harris" was not some "poor little rich girl" whose career was subsidized by Daddy and Mommy. In fact, the rebellious Harris chose acting as a profession primarily because her family was dead set against her doing so. Trained at the Yale School of Drama and the Actors' Studio, the deceptively waiflike Harris made her first Broadway appearance in the now-forgotten 1945 production "It's a Gift". Five years later she took Broadway by storm as 12-year-old Frankie Addams in Carson McCullers' A Member of the Wedding. Twenty-five years old at the time of the play's premiere, Harris was 27 when she re-created the role in the 1952 film version, but was still so touchingly believable as an awkward adolescent that she was nominated for an Academy Award.
Julie Harris has a small physique and a powerful personality. In a career extending over half a century, she has been a gifted and very successful theatre performer who as ... made the occasional film. She was born in 1925 into a wealthy family. After attending the drama school at Yale, she made her Broadway debut, at the age of 20, in It’s a Gift. This was the first of several failures in which she appeared before receiving acclaim and the Donaldson Award for her performance as Frankie Adams in The Member of the Wedding (1950).
Julie Harris has a gift for capturing the personalities and unique essence of her subjects on film. Julie is especially talented at photographing infants, families, and children. Her portraiture work is as diverse as the personalities of the people she photographs. Some pieces are edgy, some are joyful, and some are profound. Though every portrait has at least one thing in common: the sensitive and thoughtful approach of the artist behind the camera.
At the age of eleven, Julie Harris declared, "I'm going to be an actress-or bust!" Harris not only kept that promise; she fulfilled it with a distinction rarely equaled in American theater. Proclaimed Broadway's newest star in 1950 following her portrayal of an adolescent tomboy in The Member of the Wedding, she eventually claimed an unprecedented five best-actress Tony Awards. Among her early admirers were such stage greats as Helen Hayes and Ethel Barrymore, and Harris has long since come to be regarded as one of America's most accomplished actresses. In 1976, referring to her slightness of stature, one critic hailed her as Broadway's "tiniest tower of strength."
