The news was shocking enough, but Rankin was faced with an even more complex decision. Because DCIS is hard to detect in dense tissue and can recur at a later date in the other breast, some women opt to have a double -preventive, or prophylactic, mastectomy. Rankin talked over the decision with her husband, Yippy, their son, Tuey, and Tuey's wife, Jennifer.

As war in Europe loomed, Rankin turned her attention to work for peace, and in 1916, ran for one of the two seats in Congress from Montana as a Republican. Her brother served as campaign manager and helped finance the campaign. Jeannette Rankin won, though the papers first reported that she lost the election -- and Jeannette Rankin ... became the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress, and the first woman elected to a national legislature in any western democracy.

No sooner had Rankin turned around than she heard her name again. This time it was Woods making a beeline for her, giving her a long hug and telling her,"Thanks for being here."

On Thursday, though, Rankin clearly wanted to focus on the members of the inaugural "Pink Links" class, introducing each one to the crowd. Several had been diagnosed within the last year; one was a 16-year survivor. Helen Sherman, a five-year survivor, went back to college and earned a bachelor's degree in business and a master's degree in education after beating the disease. Lillian Stozier has learned to tandem ski jump and do water acrobatics.
