Ten days later, Rankin's doctor, Shelton Viney, called with the Mayo Clinic report. "He said the test couldn't definitively say it was cancer, but it was his recommendation that the tissue be removed." She entered Midland Memorial Hospital, near her home in Midland, Tex. "The whole process scared me to death," Rankin says. "They had to put a wire into the center of the area so that the surgeon had something to guide him for cutting." Her doctor removed breast tissue and a sentinel lymph node from her left armpit, to determine whether the cancer had spread to her lymphatic system.

Two months later, she made the difficult decision to have a double mastectomy to eliminate the risk of recurrence, a choice her doctor told her would save her life as she was wheeled into the operating room.

Judy Rankin sounded as upbeat as ever Tuesday, hopeful the hard part of cancer surgery was behind her. She cooked dinner for the first time, and even had the strength to take her dogs for walk at home in Midland, Texas.
Rankin remembers vividly the "jaw-dropping experience when you're told, yes, it is cancer." She said she couldn't talk for three days before the double mastectomy. Her family and friends like Sarah Strange, Curtis Strange's wife, who is ... a breast cancer survivor, helped Rankin through the ordeal.
