Judy Garland was an American singer and actor, without doubt one of the greatest stars of Hollywood's Golden Era of musical film. She was known for her splendid voice, intense acting, and charming wit. As a child, Garland made the song, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” famous in the 1939 film, "The Wizard of Oz."

Judy Garland As a teenager, Judy Garland became a film star. One of her first feature film roles was in Pigskin Parade (1936). Garland went to star in the Andy Hardy film series with friend Mickey Rooney beginning in 1938. The following year she scored one of her greatest on-screen successes with The Wizard of Oz (1939), which showcased her singing talents as well as her acting abilities. Garland received a special Academy Award for her portrayal of Dorothy, the girl from Kansas transported to Oz. She made several more musicals, including Babes of Broadway (1942) with Mickey Rooney, For Me and My Gal (1943) with Gene Kelly, and Easter Parade (1948) with Fred Astaire.

Judy Garland's show, like the star herself, had a troubled history, and it suffered format changes and backstage turmoil, none of which kept it from copping several Emmy nominations. Notable changes involved a switch in executive producers from George Schlatter to Norman Jewison. Garland, though, was in great voice, and there were wonderful guest shots by her daughter Liza Minnelli, Mickey Rooney, Barbra Streisand, Ethel Merman, Danny Kaye and Ray Bolger (the scarecrow from `The Wizard of Oz').

Judy Garland These are just some of the phrases used to describe Judy Garland while she was still alive and in the prime of her career. Now, more than 30 years after her death, she is still considered "Miss Show Business", "The World's Greatest Entertainer", a legend, and an icon. More than simply "Dorothy" in The Wizard Of Oz, Judy Garland has come to exemplify both the good and the bad of show business. With the passage of time, most of the bad press, rumors, and notoriety have subsided so now her immense body of work speaks for itself. And that's as it should be, for Judy Garland's lasting legacy is her work. Her incredible, natural, one-of-a-kind talent.

Judy Garland and Friends: Duets In June, Judy Garland becomes the 12th honoree in the Legends of Hollywood series. In 1940, Garland won a special Academy Award "for her outstanding performance as a screen juvenile" for her performances in the 1939 films Babes in Arms and The Wizard of Oz. "Over the Rainbow" is one of the many classic songs she introduced to her audience. The "Judy Garland" stamp image is based on a publicity photo from A Star is Born, and the side of the stamp sheet depicts her as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
