Of particular note is Garland's status as a gay icon. The reasons most frequently given for her standing (beyond her enormous talent as a performer), especially amongst gay men, are the way her personal struggles supposedly mirrored those of gay men in America during the height of her fame and her value as a camp figure.[98] A connection is frequently drawn between the timing of Garland's death and funeral, in June 1969, and the Stonewall Riots, the flashpoint of the modern Gay Liberation movement.[99]
