Judas Iscariot "man of Kerioth," the son of Simon, was one of the twelve original apostles of Jesus. He was the treasurer of the twelve. He considered it a waste of money when Mary anointed Jesus with expensive oil. And, John states that Judas had often dipped into the funds for his own personal use (John 12:3-6), and that Judas cared little about using the money to help the poor.

Every story needs a villain and Judas Iscariot fills this role in the gospels. He is the apostle who betrays Jesus and helps the Jerusalem authorities arrest him. Judas may have enjoyed a privileged position among Jesus' apostles -- John describes him as the band's treasurer and he is often present at important times. John ... describes him as a thief, but it seems implausible that a thief would have joined such a group or that Jesus would have made a thief their treasurer.

Iscariot most likely means "man from Kerioth," a city in the Negev of the region in Jesus' day which was called Judea. There are several other theories about this word. If this is true, Judas was the only one of the twelve apostles the scriptures record not coming from Galilee. Galileans were looked down upon by Judeans.
