Joust

* The upright version of Joust was a dedicated cabinet. It is similar in shape to other Williams games from that era, but it is not identical to them. The cabinet is largely black with no painted art on the front of the machine. But it does have sideart, in this case a four color painted rendering of a knight riding a large bird, while carrying a lance. This design is fairly simple when compared to the sideart on other games, and can be repainted by hand, as long as you are careful. The control panel, monitor bezel, and marquee are all filled with the expected graphics.

By far, the most accurate and well-documented Joust port is in Midway Arcade Treasures, a compilation of arcade games available for the Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox consoles, as well as a Windows XP version. Midway Arcade Treasures features concept sketches, advertisements, and an interview with John Newcomer. It ... includes Joust 2.

In Joust, you control a flying ostrich that has a knight armed with a lance riding on it. Your control is limited to left or right movement and a flap button, which you must hit repeatedly to stay aloft. But your jouster isn't the only thing on the level. Similar warriors riding buzzards materialize into each wave, and you must take them on by jousting with them. When two riders collide, the jouster with the higher elevation comes out victorious, while the other is destroyed. When you kill a buzzard, an egg pops out of that buzzard and usually lands on one of the game's several platforms. If left to its own devices, the egg will eventually hatch a new enemy rider.

This incarnation of Joust looks every bit as good as the arcade. All of the details of the original are present, including the vivid colors and fluent animation. For the sake of recreating the arcade original, HAL did a superb job. The only shortcoming is some mild, virtually unnoticeable flicker, but it's nothing that affects the gameplay. Those not familiar with Joust may be put off by the smallish graphics, but what's there is effective, and it definitely aids in the experience.

All improvements to the Joust A 'bout ride itself were completed before the Haunted Hayride had begun. The ride is much stronger and more solid. The roof will be extended next with a new deck for loading the riders. The entire rail was lowered 10 1/2 inches so that the little ones would not be so afraid of the heighth. The adults that rode it still got a kick out of it.

Irrespective of the above, in a symmetric Joust position on a board with an even number of squares, the player moving second (Black) can always win. Irrespective of what White does, Black responds with the mirror-image move. It works whether the board is symmetric about a point or a line. And the advantage of being on the right colour is of no consequence.
