The Journal, as a plot device, was maybe inspired by Tolkien and his Red Book of the Westmarch that is supposedly the ultimate source of Lord of the Rings and his other works. Similar tricks were used by other, earlier sci-fi and fantasy authors. For example, Frank Herbert opened each chapter of his first Dune novel with quotations from texts based on sayings and teachings of the main characters and groups/societies and the adventures of Sherlock Holmes were published in the form of narrations by Dr. Watson.

The Journal of Commerce-ECRI Index tracks 18 industrial commodities. "This index is designed to be a leading indicator; if demand starts to slow, the index starts to turn down in advance," says Anirvan Benerji, director of research of New York-based ECRI. He noted that the index started to turn down last spring, an early indication of the current U.S. economic slowdown that is now spreading worldwide.

The history of scientific journals dates from 1665, when the French Journal des sçavans and the English Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society first began systematically publishing research results. The standards that a journal uses to determine publication can vary widely. Some journals, such as Nature, Science, PNAS or Physical Review Letters, have a reputation of publishing articles which mark a fundamental breakthrough in their respective fields. In many fields, an informal hierarchy of scientific journals exists; the most prestigious journal in a field tends to be the most selective in terms of the articles it will select for publication.
