Joss Whedon is a man of many talents, that have served him well through out his career. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father both notable television writers of their time, Joss has stepped beyond their legacy to forge an even stronger one. With his humor and determination he has managed to leave his mark forever upon the entertainment industry with the characters he created. Iconic characters that will stand the test of time and build upon this place known as the Whedonverse. Whether it is in television with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, at the movies with Serenity and Goners, or in the comic books with Astonishing X-men, Runaways, Buffy, Fray, Angel and Serenity.
Joss Whedon is a big deal for several reason, both for his screenwriting skills and in a meta-media sense. As a screenwriter/rewriter, he's pretty sharp, including most of the stuff you liked in Speed and Toy Story. Buffy was a seminal piece of television in its perversion of genre stereotypes (he pretty much invented the ass-kicking heroine genre on TV),its well-crafted characters and its unique narrative structure. The characters reacted in emotionally honest ways even as they lived through unrealistic genre situations -- it was one of the best examples of how sci-fi/horror is really meant to be used as a lens through which you can acccelerate storytelling and highlight emotions, as opposed to the genre trappings being the end-all be-all. Within the genres themselves... he is magnificently creative. His take on the future in Firefly is both offbeat and familiar -- the very opposite, in every way of the standard shiny-future approach.

T[W]o years ago, writer-director Joss Whedon had three shows on the air: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly. Then came the cancellations. But even as the television networks began presenting their latest slate of reality vaudeville and Law & Order spinoffs, Whedon was busy planning his next project: not a TV pilot but a year’s worth of a comic book, Marvel’s Astonishing X-Men.

Joss Whedon has had a long and storied history in Hollywood as a screenwriter, on television as the writer-creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly, and back in Hollywood as the writer-director of Serenity. As an enthusiastic, unabashed fan of all things smart and geeky, it was inevitable that he'd find his way into comics, where (among other things) he's written the far-future Buffy spin-off Fray, a well-received run on Astonishing X-Men, and the Firefly miniseries Serenity: Those Left Behind. Currently, he's wrapping up his X-Men run, taking over writing duties for Brian K. Vaughan on Runaways, and scripting future issues of Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season Eight, the official comics continuation of his beloved first show.

Joss Whedon has left the building - at least, the Warner Bros building. The celebrated creator of the TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firely announced on Whedenosque.com late last week that he won't be making the new Wonder Woman movie, after all. He was upfront about why:

Joss Whedon's feature film adaptation of his much-loved television program Firefly marks his big-screen directorial debut. The movie may enchant some newcomers, but it was obviously constructed primarily for the enjoyment of the series' hardcore fanbase. This can create a very sharp divide among viewers, as pre-existing fans will most likely remain enthusiastically approving of the film, while outsiders will probably find it less compelling, despite some back-story offered in the narrative to let its story potentially stand alone. This may be a simple matter of target audience... as Serenity unabashedly offers itself directly to its cult followers -- though it gracefully avoids indulging in the in-jokes that rendered the Star Trek: The Next Generation movie franchise too embarrassing for general consumption.
