In ''No Way Out,'' an exposition of anti-Negro prejudices, Mankiewicz uses such savage dialogue as ''Dirty Nigger'' and attacks prejudice with melodramatic intensity. In ''All About Eve,'' the story of an understudy's shameless abuse of people in her climb to theatrical fame, the author-director stalks his victim with all the cunning of a panther. In The Honey Pot, Mankiewicz's pivot approach does not work. Since it is a mystery, the film's pivots must remain hidden, which conflicts with Mankiewicz's technique of exposing and exploring moments of choice. On top of this mismatch of genre and style, the released version is 20 minutes shorter than Mankiewicz's final cut, further damaging the film.
