Joseph Haydn: Sons
built 618 days ago
Joseph was ... completely supplanted by his brother. His voice had lost all its power, and he was oppressed with grief and anxiety. In the midst of his trouble Reutter suggested a means by which his voice might be preserved, and even improved, referring him to the court chapel, which contained at least a dozen castrati .1 Haydn’s father, however, having probably heard of the proposal, came in all haste to Vienna and saved his son."2
Haydn wrote a number of songs, providing nearly 400 British folk-song arrangements for the Edinburgh publisher Thomson, in addition to songs and cantatas in German and English. The two sets of Canzonettas written in England in 1794 and 1795 include settings of verses by the wife of Haydn's London surgeon, Hunter.

The development of sonata form into a subtle and flexible mode of musical expression, which became the dominant force in Classical musical thought, owed most to Haydn and those who followed his ideas. His sense of formal inventiveness ... lead him to integrate the fugue into the classical style and to enrich the rondo form with more cohesive tonal logic, (see sonata rondo form). Haydn was also the principal exponent of the double variation form, that is variations on two alternating themes, which are often major and minor mode versions of each other.
Structure: Whereas Mozart's use of sonata form is mainly concerned with perfect symmetry, Haydn is more interested in the use of a wide variety of disparate elements. He is fond of brief excursions into distant keys, frequent minor-key episodes, and highly modified recapitulations
