Joseph Haydn: Franz Joseph Haydn
built 645 days ago
Franz Joseph Haydn was born on March 31, 1732 in Rohrau, Austria. Educated at the Cathedral Choir School of St Stephen's, Vienna, Haydn earned his living initially by playing in street orchestras and teaching. He became musical director (1759–60) for Count von Morzin's court musicians, for whom he wrote some of the earliest Haydn symphonies. He entered the service of the Esterházy’s, a rich and powerful Hungarian family, as musical director in 1761. He stayed with them until 1790, composing over one hundred Haydn symphonies and Haydn piano sonatas.

Under his direction, their orchestra became one of the finest private orchestras of the time. After the death of Prince Esterhazy in 1790, Haydn was dismissed from the Esterhazy estate and traveled to London. Some of his best works were composed during this period. In 1795 he returned to Austria and was honored throughout the country.

Franz Joseph Haydn was born in Rohrau, lower Austria, on March 31st, 1732. He was the second of twelve children. He was talented with music as a toddler, and soon began to so sing and play the violin and piano. As soon as he was old enough he began to sing in the local church choir and soon was studying under the teacher J. M. Franck. This choir-master, recognizing the boy's talent, chose him to sing in the city's famous St. Stephen's Cathedral.
Franz Joseph Haydn is best remembered for his symphonic music, honored by music historians who have dubbed him the "Father of the Symphony." That is a well-known fact. But did you know that Haydn worked his way from peasant to Kapellmeister where he lived in the house of a prince? Did you know that although Austria was his home, he traveled to London to write his most famous symphonies? Did you know that Haydn's oratorio "The Creation" grew out of his love of nature, as he was an avid hunter and fisherman? Or did you know that Haydn was mentor to a young music student by the name of Mozart?

Franz Joseph Haydn was one of the most influential and remarkable musicians of the Classical era. Haydn’s life is the story of how the son of a wheelwright from a little Austrian town rose to become one of the most prolific composers the world has ever seen. Haydn not only wrote a lot of music, including 104 symphonies and 68 string quartets, but he wrote them well. He was known largely for his symphonies, but ... for his other works, and most notably for his master piece, the three-act oratorio entitled “The Creation.” Early Life

Franz Joseph Haydn (he never used the Franz) (1732-1809) was a leading composer of the high classical period, second only to W.A. Mozart. A life-long resident of Austria, he spent most of his career as a court musician, running the orchestra, opera company, etc etc of the wealthy Esterhazy family on their remote estate - for which he had to compose most of the music. Being isolated from other composers and currents of music, he was, as he put it, "forced to become original". Unlike Mozart, he had a quiet and uneventful life.
