Mitchell's singing began in small nightclubs and busking on the streets of Toronto and in her native Western Canada. She subsequently became associated with the burgeoning folk music scene of the mid-1960s in New York City. Mitchell achieved fame in the late 1960s and was considered a key part of the Southern California folk rock scene. Throughout the 1970s, she explored and combined the pop and jazz genres. Mitchell has amassed a body of work that is highly respected by both critics and fellow musicians[2], with the influential All Music Guide going as far as stating that, "When the dust settles, Joni Mitchell may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century".[3]

Despite the brilliant contributions from Leisz and his bandmates, it’s always Mitchell’s show. And if this seems like a lot of electric guitar info, don’t worry—it’s still one of the acoustic guitar’s greatest icons playing it. Joni Mitchell fans can see up close how she works her alternate tuning magic (and a visit to jonimitchell.com/GuitarTunings.html will tell you exactly what’s going on for each tune). This DVD is surely a great testimonial for the Roland VG-8, but it’s really a showcase for how Mitchell brought her amazing acoustic oeuvre into the 21st Century.

In one way, the show is a departure for Mitchell. While much of her previous visual art has been painting and drawing, the new works are modified photographs taken with disposable cameras. But in another way, the exhibit revisits recurring themes in Mitchell's art. She has always been known for her political and social concerns.

Mitchell: Well, apparently one in a hundred people have this kind of an aura. It's almost like autism, which is more than a hundred fifty now. So it's not that rare, but, yeah, I've had like a thief brush by me and go "Thief" as they brush by me and then Pollyanna myself out of it. So I've kind of learned, you know, that the antenna does work and to trust it more.
