Joni Mitchell's first, eponymous album is a wonderful debut, showing the richness of her songwriting skills and her vocal talent. Already the songs show her magical touch with lyrics that seem both personal and universal, and that create indelible moods, ranging from longing ("Michael From Mountains" to exuberance ("Night in the City") to loss ("Marcie") to magic ("The Dawntreader"). Each song has a unique personality. A classic.

Joni Mitchell Singer-song writer Joni Mitchell was a major musical star in the 1970s and 80s, but she hasn't produced a recording of original work in nearly 10 years. Then, in a burst of activity over the past months, she's collaborated on a ballet, released a new album titled Shine and launched a new art exhibit.

In addition to her own extensive body of work, Joni Mitchell has been an enormous influence on many artists with her unique guitar styling and expressive lyrics. She was inducted in the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007.

May 10, 2001: New York Daily News, 5/9/01, Mitchell Fink's (gossip) column, page 19: It Was Fate: Stevie Meets Her Destiny: "A chance meeting between celebrities can sometimes turn into a career opportunity. Last week, when Stevie Nicks was a guest on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," the blond rocker ran into the members of Destiny's Child -- who were down the hall rehearsing for their weekend appearance on "Saturday Night Live." Nicks, whose latest album, "Trouble In Shangri-La", came out last week, is a big favorite of the pop trio. In fact, the group's latest single, "Booylicious", contains a guitar riff from one of Nicks' old songs, "Edge of Seventeen." Well, all the gals began talking and suddenly Nicks was being asked to appear on the "Bootylicious" video. She agreed.
Recently, Joni Mitchell has voiced her discontent with the current state of the music industry, describing it as a "cesspool". She stated her dislike of the record industry's dominance, and her desire to control her own destiny, possibly through releasing her own music over the Internet. In 2002 she released Travelogue, a collection of reworkings of her previous songs with lush orchestral accompaniments, stating that it would be her final album. If so, Travelogue is an excellent reworking and recap of her staggering body of work.
