Jonestown: Suicides
built 266 days ago
On December 12, 1978, the New York Times reported that a Guyanese court ruled that all but three of the deaths in Jonestown were the result of murder, not suicide. No California politician, official, judge, or attorney who participated with Jones in schemes to defraud government social programs, rig elections, or remove children from their parents or state supervision has ever been charged or even investigated for their complicity in these crimes.

The allegations were serious: Jonestown sounded more like a slave camp than a religious center. There was talk of beatings, forced labor and imprisonments, the use of drugs to control behavior, suspicious deaths, and even rehearsals for a mass suicide.

The mass suicide at Jonestown, rated second in international news impact to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, until it was bumped to third place by 9-11. World-class questions remain. What really happened? What does it all mean? or what?
The sheer numbers involved - 909 in the final count - will cause Jonestown to be remembered for as long as mankind walks this planet. There are precedents for it, but the best known of them - the suicide pact of 960 Jewish Zealots at the fortress of Masada - has been questioned by archaeologists, while that at Saipan, when 1,000 Japanese civilians threw themselves from a cliff just before the island was taken by American forces during the Second World War, has been lost in the mind-boggling statistics of death for that war as whole.
