Jonestown is located 20 miles northwest of Austin in northwestern Travis County. Settled in the 1930’s by two brothers, Emmet and Warren Jones, Jonestown is a much newer community than many others locally. Jonestown was incorporated in the 1980’s, and by 1988, the population had grown to 683.
Jonestown was a beautiful, productive, thriving interracial community, acclaimed as a "paradise," which was the happiest and most fulfilling life that most of its largely-inner city residents had ever known. It was a shining model of how inner city dwellers can thrive and excel on a worldwide stage. It was described by visitors as "a paradise," "a superior society," "like coming to another planet," and " a credit to humanity."
Jones and his followers had moved to “Jonestown” with the vision to create a completely self-sufficient community based on the ideals of socialism and communalism. Each person would work for the common good, providing food, shelter, clothing, health care and education for themselves. In this community everyone would be equal and could live in peace. It was a noble ideal. One, as Jones would constantly remind them, which was worth dying for.
