Jonathan Demme: Movies
built 184 days ago
Jonathan Demme's "The Truth About Charlie" is one of those movies where you have to believe everyone had a ball making the film. It's a playful, cinematic riff on Stanley Donen's 1963 "Charade," the French New Wave and the joys of making movies in Paris. The ghosts of movies past turn up at every corner, from the fashionable 16th Arrondissement to the flea market and Gare du Nord.

During the early stages of editing "Swing Shift", Demme had attended a Talking Heads concert in Los Angeles and been knocked out by their performance. Coming out of the show, he realized "My God, that's a movie waiting to be filmed." He sold the band's leader David Byrne on his vision of honoring the excitement of the live performance by avoiding tricky shots, flashy editing techniques, anything that would constitute a digression from the performance itself (like cutaways to the audience). Compiled from three concerts, "Stop Making Sense" was a joyously energetic, yet cool showcase which helped propel the Talking Heads (and Byrne) to mainstream acceptance. Demme ... directed several rock videos for other bands including UB40, New Order ("Perfect Kiss" 1985) and Fine Young Cannibals ("Ever Fallen in Love?"). These artists and quite a few others contributed songs to the lively and memorable soundtrack of "Something Wild", for which Laurie Anderson and John Cale wrote the fine score.

Demme approached Hitchcock about the idea for a film after seeing one of his concerts during the 1996 "Moss Elixer" tour. Originally he planned to shoot just one video; one video turned into several videos before Demme decided to make an entire film. Hitchcock was performing at the time with violinist Deni Bonet and guitarist Tim Keegan, whose performances in the movie -- and on the soundtrack CD -- offer a graceful melodic counterpoint to Hitchcock's guitar work. "Effectively what you have is a portable show," says Hitchcock in an interview. "You project it at them, and you're at a Robyn Hitchcock show, or a kind of Robyn Hitchcock show. But it's neither the sterile confines of a phone log, nor the rock club with the smoke and the sweat.

Demme was then employed as a unit publicist by B-movie maven Roger Corman who eventually let him script the biker flick Angels Hard as They Come. Demme later made his feature film directing debut with Caged Heat; he went on to helm two other Corman vehicles, Crazy Mama and Fighting Mad.
