Below: The Joker discusses his twisted motivations with a captive Silver St. Cloud (who was, at the time, the girlfriend of Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. the Batman). The Joker here succinctly describes the two things that he loves most: murder and being the Batman's arch-enemy. Here, as in many other comics, the Joker makes it clear that he doesn't truly desire to kill Batman, for without Batman, the Joker would have no reason to exist.

Before turning the orbital laser on Batman, the Joker admonishes him, saying, "Poppa spank...!" which is a throwback to something the Batman says in an early issue of the Detective Comics series. more

His complete origin is not truly known and who he was before he became the Joker has been a matter of much speculation among fans. The Joker himself does not even remember much of his past (one comic book, Batman: Shadow of the Bat #37, revealed that his name was possibly Johnny Jape, but this may have been an attempt at sarcasm.)
