Johnny Weissmuller Johnny Weissmuller died quietly in his sleep five months before his 80th birthday on January 20, 1984. Among the letters of condolence was a telegram from President Ronald Reagan and Linda Christian who'd played alongside Weissmuller in Tarzan and the Mermaids. At his request, a recording of his famous Tarzan yell was played as his coffin was lowered into the ground.
In the late 1950s, Weissmuller moved back to Chicago and started a swimming pool company. He ... lent his name to other business ventures, but did not have a great deal of success. He retired in 1965 and moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he was Founding Chairman of the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
Weissmuller swam in the 1924 Olympics in Paris, and won gold medals in the 100-and 400-meter freestyle events. He set a world record of 5:04.2 in the 400, and his time of 59.0 in the 100 was an Olympic record. At the same Games, he was a member of the gold-medal-winning 4-200 freestyle relay team as well as the bronze-medal-winning U.S. water polo team. In the same year, he beat his own world-record 100-meter time, lowering the record to 57.4 seconds. This time wasn't beaten until 1944.

Weissmuller lived in Florida until the end of 1973, then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he was a greeter at the MGM Grand Hotel for a time. In 1974, he broke a hip and leg. While hospitalized he learned that, in spite of his strength and lifelong daily regimen of swimming and exercise, he had a serious heart condition.
Johnny Weissmuller swings back into action with Warner Home Video’s The Tarzan Collection Volume 2 debuting on 18th June exclusively to HMV. Following the success of WHV’s first Weissmuller Tarzan set in 2005, this new DVD collection includes the home video debut of Weissmuller’s last six Tarzan films, Tarzan Triumphs/Tarzan’s Desert Mystery, Tarzan and the Amazons/Tarzan and the Leopard Woman and Tarzan and the Huntress/Tarzan and the Mermaids.
