LYCOS RETRIEVER
Johnny Depp: Star Johnny Depp
built 118 days ago
Actor Johnny Depp, a teen idol for more than 20 years, is one of the most revered and respected artists working in cinema today. Depp has managed to put together a string of commercial successes without diminishing his stature by succumbing to the artistic compromises that turn so many "movie stars" into parodies of themselves. Still, Mr. Depp's continuously expanding fan base is rabidly devoted. Any new Johnny Depp movie is a cause to start the car and drive down to the theater, and never just for viewers who are in love with him.

Among all of the movie stars who made this top-ten list, only Johnny Depp had a major box office success ... far in 2003 (in Pirates of the Caribbean). Most of the people on this list have not released a major movie this year, and in a few cases, they have released movies that have fared less well than usual. Also missing from the list are the stars of big box office comedies, e.g. Adam Sandler, Steve Martin, Mike Meyers, and Jim Carrey. Perhaps this says something about the power of video and DVD rentals?

Johnny Depp started smoking at 12, and played guitar in a rock band called The Flame. He lost his virginity to a groupie at 13, in the band's van. His parents divorced when Depp was in high school, and Depp soon dropped out to pursue music full-time. Rechristened The Kids and later Six Gun Method, the band moved to Los Angeles, and had their biggest moment as an opening act for Iggy Pop. Depp struggled to get by, but eventually met Nicolas Cage, who suggested he try auditioning for film and TV work. His first major role was in A Nightmare on Elm Street, as a young boy plagued by bad dreams. Depp sprang to fame in the lead role on the upstart Fox network's first show, 21 Jump Street, playing a baby-faced cop recruited to infiltrate high schools and young criminals' gangs.

Johnny Depp was first famous as a heartthrob cop on the teenybopper drama 21 Jump Street (1987-1990). Then he gave up TV for the movies, playing the fantastical title character in Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands (1990) and winning critical acclaim in What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993, co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio). Depp became known as a handsome and thoughtful actor who craved variety; In the 1990s he took a wide range of roles, from the lead in Don Juan DeMarco (1995, with Faye Dunaway and Marlon Brando) to Ichabod Crane in Burton's Sleepy Hollow (1999, with Christina Ricci). In 2001 he played real-life cocaine trafficker George Jung in the movie Blow (co-starring with Penelope Cruz), and he was a box office superstar as the comically swaggering pirate Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (co-starring Orlando Bloom) and its sequels (2003-07). That role earned him an Oscar nomination in 2004, and he followed up with another nomination for playing J.M. Barrie (the creator of Peter Pan) in Finding Neverland (2004).
