A Kentucky-born, Florida-bred, teen-aged Johnny Depp and his band, The Flame, were popular in local nightclubs. And after renaming themselves The Kids, they toured with and opened for Iggy Pop. Sparse gigs and odd jobs in Los Angeles led to acting – Depp's now ex-wife Lori Anne Allison (1983-85), a makeup artist, introduced her husband to actor Nicholas Cage, who, in turn, shared his agent.

The 10/23/06 issues of Us Weekly and People magazine (same issue date) both have the same photo of Johnny and Jennifer Lopez backstage at the Noche de Ninos Gala where Johnny was honored with the Courage to Care Award. They are standing close together, arms around each other's backs. In People, the caption says: Beverly Hills, Oct. 7; Jennifer Lopez presented Johnny Depp with the Courage to Care Award at the Noche de Ninos Gala in recognition of his commitment to kids' causes. Depp joined a rock band called The Flame, with whom he toured the Florida nightclub circuit. The Flame eventually dubbed themselves The Kids, and the band was hired as the opening act on an Iggy Pop tour. Hoping to strike a chord as famous rockers, The Kids moved to Los Angeles. Depp took a job selling ballpoint pens over the phone in order to support himself, but he and his fellow rockers decided to break up and move on.

With Chuck E. Weiss, Depp reportedly paid US $350,000 for the Central Nightclub in Los Angeles, California, and turned it into the Viper Room at 8852 Sunset Blvd. Other stars in contention to buy the club in 1993 included Arnold Schwarzenegger and, separately, Frank Stallone.

Depp's family settles in Miramar, Fla., when Depp is 7, living in a hotel until his father finds work. Prone to self-inflicted knife wounds – his arms still bear the visible scars – Depp starts smoking at 12, loses his virginity at 13, starts doing drugs at 14 and eventually drops out of high school at 16 to join the garage band, The Kids.
