John Walker Lindh

John Walker Lindh was sixteen when he converted to Islam. At the age of twenty he is in custody for participating in a jihad against the United States. There is no evidence that he has killed anyone. There is evidence that he joined a fundamentalist group whose purpose was to retaliate for wrongs, real or imagined, committed by the government of the United States of America.

L[I]ke many American conservatives, John Walker Lindh is a rebel against modernity. As he descries the facile hedonism of his fellow hip-hoppers online, he sounds like a young Bill Bennett denouncing the moral emptiness of American culture:

John Walker Lindh Facing abusive interrogation while in custody, John Walker Lindh had 9 of the 10 charges against him dropped. While then Attorney-General John Ashcroft was declaring that Lindh dedicated himself to "killing Americans", the actual indictment against him said nothing about this. Although he was exonerated of all terrorism-related charges, John is now serving a 20-year sentence in an American prison. John is a Muslim convert who has explained he went to Afghanistan in the spring of 2001, prior to the U.S. invasion, to help defend innocent civilians there from attacks by the Northern Alliance warlords. Lindh is behind bars for participating in another country's civil war. Ironically, individual Americans have been doing that for a long time.

John Walker Lindh: American Taliban John Walker Lindh, at age 14, was a confused, unhappy, angry little boy with a fascination for the violent rhythms of hip-hop music. By age 16, his anger was directed at Jews, Gays, Zionists, Christians, and White America. In 1998 he joined a "Pakistan-based jehadi organization" linked to terrorists wishing to overthrow the USA. He wanted to be a holy warrior. The presence of U.S. ships off the coast of Yemen was "an act of war against Islam" he declared. He journeyed to Yemen on a mission which coincided with the bombing of the USS Cole.

(Editor's note: On July 15, John Walker Lindh pleaded guilty to two charges, rendering subpoena efforts against CNN free-lancer Robert Pelton moot. On July 12, before Lindh's plea, U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III had ruled that Pelton could not avoid a subpoena to testify. Ellis said journalists enjoy no First Amendment privilege against testifying except in instances involving protection of confidential sources or harassment.)
Five weeks ago, John Walker Lindh, better known as the American Taliban, was quietly transferred to a medium-security prison northeast of Los Angeles, in the Mojave Desert. He was relieved by the move, which took place after federal officials in Alexandria, Virginia, had debriefed him for a year about his knowledge of Muslim extremists. His temporary cell in Virginia had reminded Lindh of a dog kennel; his meals were delivered through a metal slot in the door, and he had no interaction with other inmates. At the new prison, Lindh has a roommate and a window. On occasion, he can mingle with the general prison population, which includes about twenty other Muslims, most of them American-born converts like himself. His main diversions are translating ancient Arabic religious texts and reading.
